Opioid overdose crises during the COVID-19 pandemic: implication of health disparities

Abstract Background Recent data suggest a disproportionate impact of opioid overdoses on Black Americans. The study aims to describe emergency department (ED) visits at Southern, urban ED pertaining overdose and associated health disparities. Methods Patients presenting the University Alabama Birmingham Hospital with from January 1 October 31, 2019, 2020, were identified electronic medical records. Results total number increased 9.7% (556 611) between 2020 compared 2019. Among patients who presented overdose, mean ages 50.3 years 48.3 years, in 2019 respectively. In both more Blacks than whites treated for (284 vs. 258 306 271 2020) although 28 did not record their race 2020. Consistently, deaths observed More individuals seeking treatment single years. Conclusions reported greater an southeastern region, as well higher Blacks. Our findings highlight importance substance use treatment, harm reduction, prevention efforts that should be immediately present reduce especially vulnerable populations South, i.e., community, experiencing singlehood.
